I bet you took them to photographers when they were babies. You may have even kept up with photographing milestones like birthdays. However, if you are like the average parent you probably haven’t been as vigilant about that since they were about eight or nine years old. I had a different experience only because I am a photographer. Some of the best portraits I have of my children are when they were between 10 and 16 years old. Yes, I did have to bribe my daughter with new outfits, but I am so happy that I did that. I have many nice memories of her during her those years. So many of those memories stay with me because of my photos. Incidentally, it was a self esteem boost for her. That is her below, she was cool and the pictures reminder of that. Photo shoots made her feel beautiful. I have to say that I believe that your average child this age would benefit from a boost of self esteem.

Because they can tell I am a kid kind of person they generally get along well and loosen up quickly if they are shy. Boys and girls alike love styled sessions. They are in the phase in life where they are trying to figure out who they are. I feel like they are looking for things they like. Maybe they are wondering what they may want to do with their lives when they are older. Don’t you remember? I do. It can be a confusing time for child. A styled photo shoot can be an opportunity for them to show us what they are thinking about, to express themselves. What child would not love that?
Some of the styling I like is steampunk. Check out my steampunk gallery. Children of all ages love it. They are drawn to the gadgets, hats, googles and interesting hats. Playing dress up has never been so much fun. I even have a few adults interested in a steampunk photo shoot.
If we do a photo shoot in my studio I can pull out lights and fan and make them feel like a model for a day. Because it’s all about them, they have fun and get a boost of self esteem. You get pretty photos. Even better, when you are older and going through family photos there won’t be a gap between when your child was eight and when they were sweet sixteen.
