Steampunk is a genre of science fiction that incorporates 19th century clothing and  technology with somewhat retro-futuristic ideas.  You can read more about this type of culture and styling.  You can even order gear here at steampunk heaven.  Styling steampunk sessions is fun and kids love it.

getting children into modeling with magazine publicationsDid you follow link to the Steampunk Heaven’s blog?  If you did you can probably see why children love it. The outfits are cute and full of gadgets. Gadgets are a huge factor in steampunk styling. I absolutely love the featured image of James. He is three and with such tiny arms I could wrap watches around his biceps instead of garters. No garters at my studio on children. hahah. Seriously though the steampunk styling can be done in a conservative an cute manner.  Also it’s fun to dress up. Everyone knows children love to do that.

Because the children ARE  having fun it’s easy for me to get the facial expressions that I like so much.  Steampunk styling also impresses teenagers. That in itself is impressive, hahahah.  I have yet to have a teen or tween that came in for a session that did not comment on the gear.  All of them really do want to put it on and take photos.  I do keep items in teenager sizes but most of my clothing items are for younger children.

My steampunk styling began from a photo contest I wanted to enter with a little girl named Izzi. We were working on building a modeling portfolio for Izzi.  One thing we do to get the children noticed in the fashion and modeling industry is to post images in photo contests.  Sometimes the contests have themes. The contest that we were entering had an option for an avante garde theme. Her mom loves steampunk so naturally it was something we migrated towards.  Once the images were posted and of course published everyone wanted steampunk images.  Isn’t she a doll?
