About the studio: Raleigh newborn photographer

Four years ago I moved my photography studio of 11 years from Holly Springs NC to Raleigh.  I loved my Holly Springs studio set up but had no real space to create the outside gardens that I really wanted to have for my newborn work.  My set up now is so nice.  I hired a contractor to convert a two car stand alone garage into a studio.  With his help and the help of friends and family we chemically cleaned the floor, ran additional electricity, insulated, built a faux wall and sheet rocked.  We painted and painted, the least favorite job in the process and placed all the mounting required to hold the back drops and equipment.  We added a nice walkway and I hung my portraits.  From the outside it looks like the garage that matches the house but from the inside it’s just what I needed.

The real fun began with the newborn studio.  I have a four bedroom house so I set up one room as a separate studio for newborns.  It has a huge closet to store blankets, back drops and props and plenty of wall space for portraits.  It’s so nice and cozy and a much more sterile environment for newborns as this special studio for infants does not have the high traffic of children that my bigger studio has.  The best part about my newborn studio are the gardens. I call them the Raleigh Fairy Gardens.  As I landscaped the areas I had my camera in my hand, always checking through the lens to see what the images will look like as I move flowers, bricks, logs, greenery and flag stone into specific spaces. An artist must first have a vision to be able to create art and I had the vision.  The very first thing I saw when I toured the property was the gorgeous grapevine.  It’s huge.  I have since google mapped the area and it appears to be over 50 years old.  One side tipped years ago and forms a triangle kind of entrance into which I can place babies in baskets or bread bowls to get images such as this.  Of course I added plenty of flowers to the area under the vine.

The size of the trunk is what tells me the vine is so old.  I just love to use it as a back drop for a portrait.

The next step was putting in an area with nice flag stone, plenty of interesting ground cover and flowers, flowers, flowers.  Not only did I use my camera as my guide but I made sure to place this in an area that gets shade early in the morning, because I believe that is the best time to photograph newborns and toddlers. I planted plenty of perennial plants and flowers so all through the spring, summer and fall new flowers are popping up. It’s such a nice place to photograph a newborn but large enough for toddlers and young children as well.  This was the beginning of the Raleigh Fairy Gardens.

Over on the side of the property I have my ivy garden and tropical garden area.  So many people have asked me where in the world I take these images.  You will have to book to see, it’s not what you would expect.

New at the end of 2017 and really coming to life in 2018 is my woodland fairy garden. It’s a fantastic place to photograph little boys.  The set up is more wooded, logs, ivy and ferns. I just love it and it adds such a nice atmosphere to images.   My first portrait in that area was actually published in a photography magazine.  Isn’t he just a doll?

I hope to meet lots of sweet new babies this year of 2018.  Til the next post…. Michelle Studios

The OMGawd session: Raleigh newborn photographer Michelle Studios Photography

Baby Salem came in for her newborn portraits on Tuesday.  We are calling this the OMGawd session because every five minutes or so either her daddy Mike, her mommy Cassie or I would have to exclaim “OMGawd!”.    She was absolutely adorable in every single set up that we used.  Each head band that we put on, wrap or hat looks so incredible adorable around her sweet face.  Her precious little body, so new and sweet, was incredibly cute in every set up.  She was perfect in every way possible.

Have I said before that newborn sessions are SO MUCH FUN?  Cassie, Mike and I laughed and oooh-ed and aaah-ed through the whole session.  Having the beautiful images of your baby is the best part of a newborn session but the experience is also a wonderful part of the package.  I was thrilled for them and it was so nice to see that dad was just as excited as mom.  I almost wish that I had had a video camera set up to capture the smiles on mom and dad’s face as I posed Salem and photographed her.  At one point while we were in the studio I had to break for a minute and go get my daughter to have a peek at how cute she looked.  The image with the pink hat and the big huge poms on the side was so cute and so funny we just had to share it with one more person.

I have specialized in the art of newborn photography since 2004 and have photographed over a thousand newborns BUT I can truly say that I am still honored and SUPER excited to photograph each new little person. I love my job.  The excitement from the parents at this very special time and the sweetness of each new little person is such a rush.

Salem was so relaxed and easy to photograph at 7 days young.  No matter how I placed her hands, feet or face she was relaxed and even smiled in her sleep.  She loved the little newborn swing in the fairy garden and probably would have slept there for hours.  I want every newborn’s session to be unique but I have to say that all of my new moms and dads want that shot.  It’s magical.

Congratulations Mike and Cassie. I can tell how much you love her and each other. Welcome to the world Salem, it was so great to meet you. This is a small sample of the wonderful  newborn portraits that we got of your new daughter. See if you can make it through them and not say “OMGawd” again.

Raleigh newborn photography: Baby Johnny

Baby Johnny came in last week to have his  newborn portraits taken. He is so darling, huge blue eyes, chubby cheeks and lots of rolls.  Johnny’s sweet mom Erika really wanted his images to look like newborn images but Johnny will be three months old this week.  I gave her some tips for preparing Johnny for his session.

~Keep Johnny up for at least two hours prior to his session.

~ Feed him as soon as you get to the studio.

~Bring a pacifier if you are ok with him using one.

It was a success. I warmed the studio up and mom fed him.  We were able to get darling newborn portraits in the studio and also in the fairy gardens outside.  I was a bit worried at his age that he might wake up but he didn’t.  The images came out so cute.  His mom also brought a Bat Man cover up and it ended up being one of my favorite shots from the session. I guess he is destined to be a super hero.

We were so excited about how well Johnny did being much older than the average newborn that I photograph. Hard work on mom’s part to keep him up and just the right set ups allowed us to have a very successful photo shoot.

Omgoodness look at his cheeks.

We were able to get so many cute poses that I can’t post them all but if you know his mommy you can ask to see the gallery that will go up in a couple of days with all of his images.

I enjoyed meeting you Johnny.
